Anne Bradstreet & Phillis Wheatly

Anne Bradstreet was the first English writer in North America. She was born in Northampton, England on March 20, 1612. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Dudley a steward because of her family’s position Anne was able to become educated. She was tutored in history, several different languages and in literature.  Anne married at 16 years old and not long after her family decided to migrate to America. She is a well known puritan during this time period in American literature. She was the first female writer in the British North Americans colonies to have a published works. The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America, was her first volume of poetry to be published in 1650. The first book she wrote was about the struggles she went through as a puritan wife. Anne was a very devoted mother and wife but also had a deep commitment to her faith and religious beliefs you can see this in some of her poems.  Anne died on September 16, 1672 she was 60 years old.

Phillis Wheatley was the first African American women to have a published piece of literature. She was born in West Africa on May 8, 1753 and was sold into slavery at only the age of seven. As a slave she was transported to America where she was sold to the Wheatley family. This family decided to teach her how to read and write which was very uncommon most slave owners did not do this Phillis was very lucky. She was intended to be a servant to the John Wheatley’s wife . Phillis was of poor health and Susan(wife) as a result did not train her to be a servant and decided to help her gain more intelligence. Susan gave her lessons in theology English, Latin and Greek, and also teaching of ancient history about mythology and literature. They began to recognize her talent in poetry and encouraged her to do more. At age 12 she published her first poem. In 1773 she published her first and only book called, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. Phillis’s work was first printed in the Newport Mercury, later other poems were also added.  Susan helped her with the fiances.  When her book was first published she had 17 Boston men to sign in the back of the book to prove that she indeed wrote this poems as an African American Women. Later in her life she became a free slave and got married but had many problems with money. She struggled on poverty. Phillis died on December 5, 1784.

Phillis Wheatley

I decided to give a brief history on these women because they are an important part of our development of literature. I also wanted to know  more information about them because they are very important women that many people do not know about.

Just a Dream

The Definition of a dream vision is usually a medieval poem. Which will have a framework in which the poet pictures himself as falling asleep and envisioning in his dream a series of allegorical people and events.

This song used to be one of my favorite songs about five years ago and this was only because i really like the rhythm  it had to it. When i was younger and this song became so popular i really didn’t realize the meaning of this song. It is a dream vision this man was dreaming of this girl he had falling for in this wonderful place, but when he woke up he realized it was only a dream it didn’t happen.

This song has many different rhyming couplets throughout the entire song. There is three different sets of versus with one course that is repeated five times through out the whole song. This poem has not very much imagery at all and i think that is because it is a hip-hop song. The entire song is talking about how he lost his girl and what he should have done to keep her. When i was doing research about dream images it is very common to dream about people and falling. I talked about this in a previous post and i think it ties into this dream vision/ song because he was struggling and he lost his opportunity to make things work between him and this girl. The man s regretting everything and talking about all the things he should have done.

Looking more into poetic elements i found one simile and it in the first line of the first set of versus, “I was at the top and now its like i am in the basement”. There is a lot of repetition of the certain saying and words like, “Just a Dream”, “now”,”but” and also the last stanza the line end in “up” or “everything”. When starting the line with the word “but”,  is compacting what he wants and what this mystery girl wanted.  Many of the words in this song are in past tense talking about the past and how he feels to this present day. i really couldn’t find a good rhyming scheme besides having a few rhyming couplets i think it is a free verse.  I think the theme of this song is regret and hopelessness that he will never have his love again.

I wonder if he knows this girl in real life? Has he ever physically meet her or seen her? I think this song is a very good explain of another way dream vision can be used besides in a poem.

Something important..

Falling is another thing that appears frequently in everyone’s dreams.  This symbol can represent all of your anxieties about letting go of something,  or even failing at something you have worked so hard to achieve. This relates to my next symbol that appears in our dreams frequently and that is school and exams. School is a very important part of success we need it to have opportunity’s in life. Whenever you see school in your dreams it means that you display a need to know and understand one self. I think it also represents your desires and wants in life. Exams are simple a self evaluation. What i mean by this is your mind is being examined and the results show you which part of your life is not doing as well as other aspects. The dream image of an exam can really help you understand what you need to do to grow and become better.

The last and finally symbol i would like to talk about is missing some kind of transportation. I know it sounds silly, but it really has a very deep underlying meaning just like the poem we have been talking about over this term.  Missing a ride or flight to anywhere can reveal frustrations over missing an opportunity in your life. This type of dream images show during a time that you are struggling in life over something big.

I choose these images because they relate to me at this point in my life where i am making big decisions. Everyday i am working my way through school and reaching through my school.

The story behind, “My Mistress”

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun

My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips’ red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress when she walks treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

—William Shakespeare

This poem is a one of Shakespeare famous sonnet. It was written during the Elizabethan era and during this time many poets work was based on Petrarch. Petrarch was an Italian Poet that became very famous for is sonnet sequence in praise of a women he calls Laura. He was also an important idol during the rediscovery of Greek and Latin literature. During this time period many other poets wrote  in praise of a women they had come to love/court. When Shakespeare came out with this poem it was mocking this time period in literature and the other poets. It was very popular to compare nature’s elements to women to show affection. The elements that Shakespeare used in this poem were very commonly seen. He uses a new structure within this sonnet, it has a very straightforward and bold theme throughout the whole poem. There is tons of imagery and comparisons that are made throughout.

I choose this poem because i thought it was very different from Shakespeare’s  traditional sonnets, and other poems that were written during this time period.

“I could pee on this”

I Could Pee on This

Her new sweater doesn’t smell of me
I could pee on that
She’s gone out for the day and
left her laptop on the counter
I could pee on that
Her new boyfriend just pushed
my head away
I could pee on him
She’s ignoring me ignoring her
I could pee everywhere
She’s making up for it
by putting me on her lap
I could pee on this
I could pee on this

By: Francesco Marciuliano

First off i find this poem absolutely hilarious.  The first couple of times i read this poem i could really see a guy do this to his ex or roommate that he likes. But then i took another idea in my head, what if this was some kind of pet this girl had? I can see two different sides to the poem. This poem really made me chuckle because it was very different compared to other poems that we have discussed about during class that are based on human struggles  religion, love, and religion. This poem has 14 line and has a lot of repetition and imagery within this short poem. I think the speaker of this poem is some type of pet that wants all the attention and will pee on anything or act up to get attention.

Dream Images what do we really see when we are dreaming?

This is a blog post about common images that appear in our dreams that many do not realize. I did some research on them all and was shock to find these answers.

Water is something that appears in our dreams with out us knowing what the real meaning could possible be. Water is essential to our survival we need it in our lives. The most common reason why we see water in our dream is due to the fact that in the language of mind water symbolizes physical change in our level of consciousness. Water can also be represented as our emotions that are being showed in the dream. This is a test at how well we can control them. For example the water could be cloudy, completely clear, calm, rough or polluted they can all represent different aspects of one emotions over time and can be different depending on the person.

School is something that i have personally had experienced dreaming about and it was not a good dream. In my experience i had failed a test and was very upset and crying this is all i could remember. I didn’t think dreaming about class would be so common. Surprisingly it is many people dream about some part or aspect of school. It faces you with a test that you are either ready to take our not. Another way school comes into our dreams is to show use that there is a chance for growth and learning in the psychical level of consciousnesses. Dreaming of school/class can be both rewarding and/or devastating in a way.  School can signify to the dreamer its purpose in life in the language of  the mind its self.

What is the reason a house would be present in out dreams? It provides us with comfort warmth, shelter, but why be present in out dreams? A house is a house right? I never would have imagined that a house would have such an important meaning in the world of our mind. A house represent the stages that our mind goes through. There are three main divisions of the mind conscious, subconscious and super-conscious. These stages all have sub-stages that the mind must go through in order to move to the next stage. The floors of the house represent different aspects of the mind and with this provides your mind with structure in which it uses for thinking. Closets in the house will represent the dreamers own self closed off, while bedrooms will represent intimate thoughts and emotions. Often the basement will be present and this could represent depression or neglect of ones self. Sometimes images like these appear in our dreams in order to present the dreamer with things that happen in real life that they may not be aware of or do not want to be known.

I was really amazed that these such basic elements of our life that we go through everyday could  have such an important impact on our dreams. There are so many other things we dream about and don’t really understand why we are dreaming about them. Doing this research on these dream images really opened my eyes to all the possibility that a dream can have on our life.
